Design inspiration
Here we share our design musings and inspiration on how to style your spaces conidently with our Mimi Studio art pieces.
A cushion is a transformative element for any space
A cushion goes well beyond comfort and aesthetics. It’s an invitation to craft a unique story for every room; mixing eras, fabrics, textures, colours and patterns to add your personality and style. Whether channelling your inner bohemian chic, or creating a cosy, rustic retreat, thoughtfully selected and styled cushions are an art form and an expression of individuality that can be refreshed and restyled from season to season, from year to year.
Think about the feeling you want to create
If you want to create calmness and serenity in your space, look for commonality in your grouped cushions – whether that’s a consistent theme, texture or cohesive neutral colour palette. On the other hand, if your aim is to create drama, set up a clash of opposing colours, styles or textures that command attention. A sumptuous silk alongside faux fur. Or a bold stripe against a floral print. The contrast between smooth and tactile, or patterns and stripes, creates interest and invites you in. You can also achieve contrast by using a mix of small- and large-scale patterns.
Mix up shapes and sizes
To add dimension to your setting, try varying the size of your cushions and placing the larger, plainer ones behind to provide the foundation, and adding slightly smaller or different shapes towards the front to provide depth and interest. If you like a more formal style with symmetry, opt for cushions of the same size.
How many is too many?
In our world, there's no such thing as too many cushions! How many you choose very much depends on the size of your furniture and the room size. We like mixing the groupings – three here, five there – or a single accent cushion on a feature chair. Keep in mind, odd-numbered groupings generally look more visually appealing and effortlessly styled than even-numbered groupings. But don't discount the power of one. A hero cushion added to a plain bedding set can turn a functional space into a dreamy retreat.
Run with the seasons
Consider changing your cushions with the seasons to enliven and refresh your space, without spending a fortune. Dark colours, rich fabrics and moody patterns are perfect for an inviting winter vibe. And cool or neutral colours in natural linens and cottons come into their own for summer.
Create a balance for prints to shine
There's something about a vibrant patterned fabric that releases our inner child. For balance, group a heavily patterned cushion with others that are of a solid colour or a more subdued print (small checks or stripes) to give the hero cushion maximum impact and to avoid overwhelming the space.
What's inside, counts
Depending on placement, your cushions should also provide lounging comfort. Look for good quality inners that give a luxe feel and provide support. We prefer duck feather filler which feels substantial, and gives a more lived-in feel to your cushions. If you prefer a fuller-looking cushion, we suggest opting for an inner one size larger than the cushion cover.
Arrange with intention
Once you've chosen your cushions, experiment with different arrangements until you find the perfect balance. Whether you prefer a formal or more relaxed look, the key is to style with intention and creativity.
